While studying philosophy in Vienna and Prague, Alwin Arngegger began an apprenticeship with his friend Hans Bertle (1880–1943), who belonged to a family of famous Austrian artists. Bertle encouraged Arnegger to move to Munich to continue his studies at the Academy of Art under Carl von Marr (1858–1936), a German-American artist from Milwaukee. After perfecting his signature style that merged technical perfection with expressive use of light and color, Arnegger established a small studio in the Schwabing district of Munich.
