An almost life-size representation of Jesus suspended on a now missing cross, this sculpture vividly depicts Jesus’ suffering. As described by scholar Marilyn Stokstad, details like “the anguish of death in the face, the carving of globules of blood, the death-like pallor of the flesh tones contrasting dramatically with the red of the blood,” serve to encourage worshippers to identify with the crucified body of Jesus and contemplate the notion of salvation through sacrifice.
