Quilts from the University of Kansas Museum of Art

(No. 2)This quilt shows how the nine main pieces in a Nine-patch pattern can use different shapes and proportions to create a new design. Here the four large squares are made up of the traditional Nine-patch while four rectangles and a center square form an X across the block. The white squares are quilted with a double feather wreath design.

Although this one was made in the 20th century, patchwork quilts similar to it were valuable to the early settlers for whom cloth was often expensive and scarce. The small pieces which make up the pattern could be salvaged from old, worn-out clothing so that nothing was wasted.
