Marguerite Guitou Knoop was a trailblazer of abstract sculpture in the male-dominated art world after World War II. Initially she sculpted portrait busts in Paris, but began experimenting with abstract sculpture in 1944. She concentrated on jewelry-making for several years after her leg was crushed by a large chunk of travertine in her studio, but she returned to sculpting as she regained mobility. Migarateur II demonstrates how Knoop combined classical and Cubist elements to explore connections between human and non-human forms.
