The binary terms “wen” and “wu” are an important foundation for the construction of Asian masculinity. “Wen” stands for the literary and is characterized by the scholar, the civil servant, the refined, cultured man of letters, while “wu” which means “military” is represented by the warrior, the samurai, and the man of the sword.
