The Records of Kamakura was an eight-volume historical guidebook of the ancient capital which was published in Kyoto in 1685. The book includes a lengthy description of Hachiman, the most important Shinto shrine in Kamakura. Among the sacred treasures preserved at the shrine was the Casket of Twelve, a small casket which contained thirty small combs of isu wood. The book contains a picture of one of the combs which Shumman must have copied.
