The events leading up to the execution of Jesus of Nazareth were frequently depicted on altarpieces created in the late 1400s in the Danube Region, or present-day Austria and southern Germany. This painting was inspired by the work of Martin Schongauer, whose engraving The Flagellation of Christ is also in the Spencer Museum’s collection. Schongauer was a painter and engraver from present-day France known for his delicate, elongated figures and detailed drapery, both of which are recognizable in this work. The painting’s existence indicates the widespread appeal of Schongauer’s prints across Europe and the ways that painters borrowed and reconfigured imagery by other artists.
